EU Common Agricultural Policy [CAP]

The EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is a system of agricultural subsidies and programs. It represents roughly 40% of the EU's yearly budget, but is less than 0.5% of the GDP in the EU. Some of its main tenets are:

  • Ensure a stable supply of affordable food
  • Provide a reasonable standard of living for EU farmers while allowing the agricultural industry to modernize and develop
  • Ensure that farming can continue in all regions of the EU
  • Improve the quality of Europe's food
  • Guarantee food safety
  • Look after the well-being of rural society
  • Ensure that the environment is protected for future generations
  • Provide better animal health and welfare conditions
  • Complete these tasks at a minimal cost to the EU budget
