In a pivotal moment for our mission to create a greener and more resilient Skopje, CED FLOROZON along with the Green Institute and Macedonian Women Lobby recently organized a formal meeting with the Minister of Environment and Physical Planning. The focus of this significant meeting was to present the draft amendments to the Law on Urban Greenery, prepared by an expert working group established within the "More Greenery for Resilient Skopje" Project. The outcomes were nothing short of remarkable as the Ministry offered its full support, affirming the credibility and importance of our proposed amendments.
The meeting marked a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to advocate for a more sustainable and eco-friendly urban landscape. Skopje, like many other cities worldwide, faces the challenges of urbanization, climate change, and environmental degradation. The "More Greenery for Resilient Skopje" Project seeks to address these challenges by strengthening urban greenery, promoting sustainability, and enhancing the overall quality of life for Skopje's residents. Moreover, the Project recognizes the importance of green spaces in climate resilience which helps to reduce the urban heat island effect, control water runoff, and provide habitat for wildlife. The heart of today’s discussion was the presentation of the draft amendments to the Law on Urban Greenery aiming to fortify Skopje's ability to adapt to climate change. The proposed changes which are the culmination of extensive research, expert analysis, and stakeholder input, are designed to enhance the management, protection, and expansion of urban green spaces within the city. The core objective of these amendments is to ensure that urban green spaces are accessible and beneficial to all residents. This means not only preserving existing green areas but also creating new ones and maintaining a high standard of care for all urban greenery.
We are grateful for the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning's receptive approach and interest in our proposals. As we move forward, we will continue to work closely with government officials, community leaders, and citizens to ensure that Skopje's urban greenery flourishes.
