FLOROZON is dedicated to advocating for a greener, healthier, and safer environment in the Balkans. One of the latest milestones in this journey was our participation in the regional conference organized within the BALKAN OSH NET project, held from October 25 to 27 in Kopaonik, Serbia. During this event, the president of CED FLOROZON, delivered an enlightening presentation on the topic of "Effective Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Measures in Agriculture for Healthy Food and Safer Farmers."
Agriculture is a cornerstone of the Balkan region's economy, providing sustenance for millions and supporting countless livelihoods. However, it's also a sector that poses several inherent risks to the well-being of those working in the fields. The central message of our presentation was clear: agriculture can be both productive and safe, and it's our collective responsibility to ensure the health and safety of farmers.
The key messages sent by the presentation were:
- The first step towards a safer agricultural sector is recognizing the potential risks. Inadequate training, outdated equipment, and limited access to healthcare are just a few of the challenges that Macedonian farmers face. By identifying these risks, we can develop effective solutions.
- Education is paramount in creating a safe farming environment. CED FLOROZON emphasized the need for comprehensive training programs that equip farmers with the knowledge and skills to manage risks and adopt safe practices.
- Outdated machinery can be a significant hazard. To mitigate this risk, we stressed the importance of providing farmers with access to modern, well-maintained equipment, reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.
- Prompt medical attention is crucial in case of an accident. Our presentation highlighted the need for improved access to healthcare facilities and services in rural areas.
- Safety should be ingrained in the culture of farming communities. FLOROZON advocated for the development of a culture where safety is not just a set of rules but a way of life for farmers and their families.
- Achieving safe and healthy farming practices requires a collaborative effort. Governments, agricultural organizations, NGOs, and individual farmers must work together to improve conditions for those working in agriculture.
