A public forum with citizens, institutional representatives, and civil society organizations was successfully organized today at the House of Culture in the Municipality of Gjorche Petrov, focusing on one of the most pressing local environmental challenges — the management of household bio-waste.
The event aimed to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between citizens and local authorities in developing sustainable and inclusive approaches to waste management. Participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences, share opinions, and discuss practical solutions that can improve the collection, separation, and processing of organic waste within the municipality.
Discussions covered several key aspects of bio-waste management. The first session focused on the current state of municipal waste systems and the legal responsibilities of local self-governments, highlighting the need for stronger enforcement and better coordination between institutions and service providers. The second part of the forum explored models of social entrepreneurship as innovative approaches for transforming bio-waste into valuable products, contributing both to environmental protection and local economic development.
Special attention was also given to the inclusion of vulnerable groups in waste management processes — recognizing that social participation and equal opportunities are essential components of a circular economy. Moreover, the forum emphasized the crucial role of citizens as active contributors to change, whose daily practices and awareness can make a significant impact on creating a cleaner and more sustainable community.
The forum concluded with a constructive exchange of ideas and proposals from citizens, providing valuable insights for developing a more responsible, practical, and sustainable local bio-waste management system.
The event was organized within the project “Civic Activism for Achieving a Circular Economy in Organic Waste Management” , financially supported by the Government of Switzerland through the Civica Mobilitas program and is implemented by the Resource Environmental Center (REC) – North Macedonia, in partnership with Eco Logic and FLOROZON – Center for Environmental Democracy.
CED FLOROZON extends its sincere appreciation to the Municipality of Gjorche Petrov for its support, as well as to all participants and speakers for their active engagement and meaningful contributions that made this event both successful and inspiring.
