We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new initiative — “Nature-Based Solutions for Advancing Climate Mitigation of the City of Skopje”, a project dedicated to promoting innovative, sustainable, and community-driven approaches to climate action in North Macedonia’s capital.
The project will be implemented in the municipalities of Gjorche Petrov, Karposh, and Kisela Voda, which face increasing environmental pressures such as urban sprawl, loss of green spaces, rising urban temperatures, and localized flooding. These challenges threaten the well-being of residents and highlight the urgent need for integrating Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) into local planning and development processes.
Through this initiative, we aim to demonstrate how working with nature can enhance urban resilience and contribute to climate change mitigation. Specifically, the project will:
✅ Implement three pilot NbS interventions, including the establishment of green corridors, riparian buffers, and urban reforestation zones, designed to reduce heat stress, prevent flooding, and improve biodiversity.
✅ Train over 60 municipal officials, CSO representatives, and community stakeholders in NbS planning, design, and implementation, ensuring long-term knowledge transfer and institutional capacity building.
✅ Develop and publish the first practical NbS Guide tailored for North Macedonia, providing actionable methodologies, technical standards, and case studies for municipalities and practitioners.
✅ Raise public awareness and empower youth and underserved groups to take an active role in local climate action, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility for environmental protection.
By integrating nature into urban systems, this project seeks to contribute to the transformation of Skopje into a greener, more resilient, and sustainable city, aligned with European Green Deal principles and the goals of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.
Together with our partners and local communities, we are committed to demonstrating that Nature-Based Solutions are not just environmental measures — they are smart, inclusive, and cost-effective tools for building cities that work in harmony with nature.
The project is financed by the Embassy of Canada in Belgrade via Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI)
