At the request of the Center for Environmental Democracy FLOROZON and the Macedonian Young Lawyers Association, we held a working meeting with the President of the Republic of North Macedonia, H.E. Ms. Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova.
The discussion focused on current environmental challenges, the constraints faced by civil society, and North Macedonia’s position regarding global climate policies and EU integration obligations in the environmental sector.
Particular emphasis was placed on the rule of law and the need for stronger participatory democracy, especially in the processes of drafting, consultation, and adoption of new legislation. We also discussed the importance of alignment with EU environmental acquis (Chapter 27)—not only as a technical requirement, but as a substantive process that requires transparency, institutional accountability, and effective mechanisms for public participation.
We consider this meeting an important step toward establishing regular dialogue and partnership between institutions and civil society, with a clear objective: stronger environmental protection, more robust democratic processes, and increased institutional responsibility.
